Sophomoritis

In my experience, the upperclassmen always were just a little bit cooler than the underclassmen who came in to replace them in any given class year.  Thus, I defined the various “-itis”es for the classes.

Freshmanitis is when the few seniors you’ve gotten to know leave your life forever, after only being around for a short time.

Sophomoritis is when the class two years above you leaves.  It’s harder, because you’ve gotten to know them even better than the previous senior class, and though it may be a little more likely you’ll remain friends with them, it’s still not very likely they’ll be around much.

Junioritis is when you realize that soon, everyone older than you will have gone, and you realize you’ll be the cool upperclassmen to the underclasses.  It’s a stage of acceptance, but still regret, as the class directly ahead of you, which you’ve gotten to know the most outside your own class, is the one that leaves.

Senioritis is, of course, when you’re finally a senior and you’re just itching to get on to bigger and better things.  And you understand what it’s like to feel the other -”itis”es.  It’s hard to explain to underclassmen, and the best course is honestly to let them figure it out for themselves.

Of course, I had very good friends in grades lower than mine, as well.  But I think everyone can agree on an individual level that it’s just not the same.
